Interview with Mr. Yu

Mr Yu, Science Teacher, MS 131

When did you develop an interest in science?

As you know I’m a science teacher now.  Teaching is a second career for me. I used to be a computer programmer.  I have a Master’s degree in Computer Engineering. I was heavily influenced by my father since I was really small.  That’s why I chose this major. My father bought me a lot of toys that were science related and he did a lot of engineering projects at home.  He fixed the T.V.(the bulky kind), hardwired the house and fixed all sorts of stuff. I observed and helped with these projects. I started thinking, this is cool.  That’s when I developed my interest in science.  

What country were you born in?  

I was born in China.  In the Southwest part of the Sichuan province.  

When did you move to America? 

I first came here in 2007.  I came here for college. Polytechnic University.  One year later it became New York University.  

In your opinion, what are the benefits and challenges of living in America?  

Why do I say here?  Technically I was an international student when I first came to America.  I met my wife. She is a U.S. citizen. It made me decide to stay here. I think that’s the most important reason I stay here.  

I still feel freedom here.  I agree with American ideals – the freedom part of American ideals. This is something that makes me feel happy.  

The culture differences are challenging.  A big part of my life is back in China. When I first came here there were all kinds of challenges, especially language and cultural challenges.  Right now I still feel a distance between me and the whole society. I can make friends easily. I still feel the cultural difference. People talk about football but I don’t know much about this sport.

What do you miss about your country?

If I say food, it would be a lie.  New York City has so many good Chinese restaurants.  I miss my childhood friends. I had so many good years with them.  I still have a connection online. That’s the biggest challenge.  

What languages do you speak other than English?

English and Mandarin.  I am learning Cantonese since my wife is from Canton.  She is very fluent in Mandarin.

What sports do you enjoy?

I used to play badminton a lot.  I enjoyed it. When I came here I little chance to play so then if you count esports as a sport then that’s my current interests.

What is your opinion on Ms 131 warnings?

I believe MS 131 Warnings is such a great way for students to know that there are consequences.  It’s a great way for adolescents to learn the rules of society. They are not severe but it’s a great way for students to know that rules apply and consequences follow.
