“Any student who doesn’t give up and tries is a favorite in my book.”

Why did you decide to teach Chinese?

I studied to work in the field of geology but when I graduated I realized I didn’t like it.  So I decided to pursue a career in education because I noticed that I’m pretty good at helping others to learn.  I’m good at English so that’s the field I went into. Actually I always wanted to teach English to people who don’t speak English.  Now, I teach Mandarin to people who don’t speak Chinese. 

Are your long dresses and long skirts part of your tradition?

Not at all.  I bought all of them in China.  I’m a big fan of dresses and skirts.  They’re more comfortable than pants. That’s why I wear them!

In your opinion, what’s the best way to learn a language?

To put it into practice. The best way to learn a language is to use it in your daily life.   

Why do you think it’s important for Westerners to learn Chinese?

Because the language is an important part of the culture.  We all can see that China is going to play an important role internationally.  We can see that China’s economy is getting better. There are going to be more Chinese doing business in Western countries.  If Westerners don’t learn Chinese there will always be a language barrier. It won’t be fair if only Chinese have to learn English.  Also, I think learning the Chinese language can help people to better understand the Chinese culture to improve communication.  

Who is your favorite student?

There are too many to say.  Any student who doesn’t give up and tries is a favorite in my book. 

Did you learn English easily?

 I came here at 23 years old.  My spoken English was so poor.  I had trouble ordering food, making friends and speaking really.  My written English was better. I had already studied English for 10 years.  My English improved in the last 10 years. I’m still learning and consider myself an English Language Learner.  I force myself to read the newspaper in English even though reading in Chinese would be more comfortable.
