Hi I’m Zeina and this is my Teacher Interview column. I’ll be doing multiple interviews with teachers just to figure out a little bit about their backgrounds. Enjoy and feel free to email me with any teachers you might want me to interview: zkeita21@ms131.org

Teacher: Ms. Lorenzo

You might have noticed a new, young teacher wandering the halls.  Her name is Ms. Lorenzo and she just graduated from NYU last year.   Ms. Lorenzo teaches Social Studies to 6th and 7th grade students and is a general favorite among the students. On October 16, Zeina interviewed Ms. Lorenzo to learn some more about her.

Q: What’s it like to be a new teacher?

A: It’s challenging but really exciting, being able to work with middle school students.

Q: When did you decide to be a teacher?

A: Senior year of college.

Q: Why did you decide to teach Social Studies?

A: I ended up changing my major during college during the 2016 election; volunteered in the Bronx. Social Studies is where we get to have deep conversations.

Q: What’s your favorite period of time in history?

A: Civil rights movement/1960s

Q: What’s the biggest challenge with teaching middle school kids?  

A: Trying to remember what it was like being a middle schooler

Q: If you weren’t a teacher, what would you be?

A: A lawyer 

Q: What advice would you give to other student teachers? 

A: Take it really seriously. It will help you find a job (making yourself known)

Q: What was it like to be a student teacher for Mr. Saunders?

A: You’re able to learn a lot of the Do’s and Don’ts. It made me feel welcome and get a chance to actually feel what it’s like to be a real teach

Q: When did you stop playing basketball?

A:  I stopped playing in my Senior year of highschool.
